The Brief
A Buderim family wanted to extend their outdoor living area with a 60 m² hardwood deck and a full-span pergola structure. The site had an elevated rear yard with a fall of approximately 1.2 m requiring pier footings. The clients wanted Merbau decking boards to match an existing pergola from the 1990s.
Our Approach
We matched the existing Merbau profile closely and sourced kiln-dried stock to minimise future movement. All structural posts were set into engineered concrete piers to appropriate depth for the site class. The pergola roof was framed with 140 × 45 treated pine rafters at 600 mm centres with a polycarbonate roofing system to allow natural light while providing weather protection.
The Outcome
The completed deck and pergola transformed the backyard into a fully usable outdoor room. The clients were particularly pleased with the colour match on the Merbau and the build quality of the pergola framing. The project was completed two days early and well within budget.
